Cryogenic Freezing of Human: We all know death is irreversible and nothing can bring a dead body back to life. But even Science hasn’t completely rubbished the idea of cryonics.

You might have come across news stories where people who have fallen into an icy lake and have been drowned for some time in the frosty water, being eventually rescued. Does this seem probable? The reason they survived the frigid water is that freezing water slowed down their brain function and metabolism to the point where almost no oxygen is required by the body and it was in a state of suspended animation.

So basically what is Cryonics or Cryogenic Freezing of Human?

Cryonics comes from the Greek word ‘kryos’ meaning cold. Cryonics is the technique of freezing the bodies of dead people in hopes of reviving them in future. Someone who has died from a disease or condition that is not curable from present day technologies can be frozen cryogenically and then re instituted in the future when a cure has been discovered. Successful preservation of the body can be done without significant decay to body tissue by Cryogenic Freezing of Human body at low temperatures.

The brain is the primary repository of memory and personal identity and any information regarding memories, personality and identity are stored in the structure of the brain (Brain injury patients retain their personal identity in most cases). The plausibility of cryonics technology is supported by the possibility of the brain to defrost without inflicting significant damage allowing one to retain his/her individual identity.

So, How is Cryonics Performed?

Cryonics procedures begin minutes after a declaration of legal death. The cryonics organization sends an emergency response team which stabilizes the body by supplying the brain with oxygen and blood to preserve necessary function till the body can be transported to the suspension facility.

Once the body is transported to the cryonics facility, the cryonics team removes the blood and other fluids from the body and replaces it with a chemical mixture called a cryoprotectant. The cryoprotectant protects the organs and tissues from forming ice crystals at extremely low temperatures since the water inside the cells freeze at low temperatures. And when water freezes, it expands -which would have resulted in destroying the cell membranes and shattering of cells.

Over the course of next few days, the temperature of the body is gradually lowered to below freezing point (-196 degree Celsius). Then, it is put inside a sleeping bag inside an aluminum pod inside a tank filled with liquid nitrogen specially designed to keep the body in that state. The body is intended to remain in that there in that state until the time when we get technologies to reverse the death process.

Neuropreservation | Cryogenic Freezing of Human brains


Neuropreservation is cryopreservation of only the brain, within the head, with surgical elimination from the rest of the body. It is expected that any future technology capable of cryopreservation should also be capable of tissue regeneration, including regrowth of a new body around a repaired brain. Other factors such as easier transportation, the focus on brain preservation quality, and lower costs have motivated many cryonicists to consider neuropreservation.

Cryopreservation costs can range from  rupees 18.6 lakhs($28,000) to rupees 1.33 crores($200,000) and are financed via life insurance .As of today, there are  four facilities in the world to retain cryopreserved bodies; of which three are in the U.S., and one is in Russia . This facility hasn’t been yet introduced in our country yet.

Approximately 250 people have been cryogenically preserved in the U.S. till date and around 1500 more have signed up to be preserved.

No revivification of any human being placed in cryonic suspension has yet been possible, yet some living organisms have been brought back from a dead or near-dead state.

CPR and Defibrillators are extensively used to bring accident and heart attack victims back from the dead on a daily basis. In fertility clinics, human embryos are frozen, defrosted and implanted in a mother’s uterus that grows into perfectly normal human beings. Some amphibians manufacture a protein inside their cells which acts as an antifreeze and protects them in extremely cold temperatures.

Revival-Bringing back the dead

Cryonics is based on expectations from future technology, especially in the fields of molecular nanotechnology and nanomedicine. Nanotechnology can be used to construct microscopic machines that ply single atoms to build or repair anything, including human tissues and cells. It is also expected that one day, nanotechnology will not only repair the damage caused to the cells by the freezing process, but also the damage caused by aging and disease.

The first cryonic revival might occur as early as the year 2045, as predicted by cryobiologists.

Only time will tell if death can actually be made reversible. Till then, all of us remain mortal souls.
