Elon Musk Tesla, SpaceX, SolarCity & Hyperloop
Rings a bell? Yup, I know your answer is affirmative.I am sure that you must be familiar with the alter ego of Ironman of the marvel universe. In case you don’t, I find it rather unsettling that in this era of internet and widespread connectivity, you aren’t familiarized with this name (still, if you don’t, just google it).
Well, you might be wondering why I am going off-track by writing about a movie character in an article about the billionaire industrialist Elon musk. The reason being, Elon musk is the real-life inspiration behind the character Tony Stark. Elon Musk Tesla, Hyperloop, SpaceX are among them. Let’s get to know Mr. Musk now.
Elon Musk Quest for Fantastic Future
Elon musk is the founder of companies like Tesla Motors, Space X, SolarCity, Zip2, X.com (merged with PayPal of Confinity). And a bunch more that didn’t work out. Super impressive, right?
How exactly is a person supposed to be excelling in so many different fields at once? And not just excelling, but building and managing billion dollars companies having entirely different domains from the scratch. How is this even humanly possible? Let’s see.
Tesla motors manufacture electricity fueled cars. Elon Musk’s SpaceX makes rockets. SolarCity is concerned with making of equipment utilizing renewable sources of energy. Another project hyperloop which aims at making large distance travel expedition by transporting people and goods through train-like vacuumed out tubes is in the pipeline. Musk is one brilliant (though the word brilliant doesn’t even begin to describe him) engineer and entrepreneur.
Elon Musk Biography in Science
Musk was born in south Africa to engineer father and model mother. Dysfunctional family circumstances and severe bullying in school forced him to deluge his entire focus on books. At the age of eight, he had already read Encyclopedia Britannica and had ran out of books to read at the library. He taught himself computer programming and the age of 12, he made a BASIC coded video game named Blaster and sold it for 500$.
Eventually,he moved to the US, where he studied at Queen’s university, University of Pennsylvania and Wharton school of business. He even got admitted to a Ph.D. program in applied physics and materials science at the Stanford University.
Except, he dropped out after 2 days to spawn a company called Zip2, which he eventually sold to AltaVista for approximately $341 in 1999. He got 22 million dollars from the deal, becoming a millionaire by the age 20. At this point, anyone would stop and start swimming in cash. But not Elon. His biggest three ventures were yet to come.
Musk then founded X.com with Peter Theil, which merged to become PayPal.com, the world’s first online payment system. PayPal was sold to E-Bay for 1.5 billion dollars in 2002. Musk made 170 million dollars from this.
So, What would you do had if you had millions of dollars and you just sold one of the world’s largest Internet companies you made? Or more precisely, what would Iron Man do? Well, he would start a new company that makes rockets. Which is exactly what musk did. And being the hardcore entrepreneur that he is, he went all in and bet all of his money on his ideas solely because they were worth pursuing. SpaceX, the rocket company he founded in 2002, got a contract from NASA 6 years later for 1.6 billion dollars.
Dragon, the first private spaceflight to go to International Space Station is a product of SpaceX.
He also founded Tesla Motors, an automaker company where he is the chief of product design. This company specializes in electricity is driven cars and their powertrain components and also produces battery charging equipment. Tesla recently announced that their latest car Model 3 costing $35,000 will be launched near the end of 2017. This car has already made 373,000 reservations as of June 2016.
SolarCity – a company which manufactures environment-friendly products utilizing renewable sources of energy was also founded by musk on the side, which happens to be the largest provider of solar-powered systems in the US.
Tesla is a publicly traded company and he plans to take SpaceX and SolarCity public, soon.
Elon musk is currently estimated to be worth 11 billion dollars by Forbes magazine.
When the director of Iron man movie series-Jon Favreau , and Iron man actor Robert Downey Jr. were developing the character, Robert suggested that they meet Elon Musk, as musk was the closest to what came to the comic book millionaire-inventor. Favreau said that Elon Musk makes no sense — and that’s the reason he got fascinated with him. When he was trying to bring the character of genius billionaire Tony Stark to the big screen in Iron Man, he had no idea how to make him seem real because musk is so intimidating. Still, they incorporated some of his characteristics into the character.
Did you know that Elon musk has a cameo in the movie Iron Man 2?

He has also recently energized the development of a new mode of transportation, termed the Hyperloop, where train like “pods” will transport people and goods over large distances through vacuum tubes at altitudinous speed. Currently, this technology is in the developmental phase and musk has made this idea open-sourced so that anyone can develop their own version of the hyperloop pod. A 5-mile long hyperloop tester track is made in Hawthorne, California for the hyperloop competition planned in early January 2017.
All these and still Musk has no plans to stop. He intends to cut down the cost of space flights by a factor of 100. He plans to colonize Mars by sending people at 500,000 dollars a ticket in near future. He plans to eventually retire on Mars. Let us see if this actually comes to picture while we live. In musk’s own words:
“We want to open up space for humanity, and in order to do that, space must be affordable”.
Is there anything this man is incapable of? Doesn’t seem so.
After all, he was once called the Thomas Edison of our Time and the World’s Raddest Man.
